This past summer I was lucky enough to have not one, but three of my cakes featured in WedLuxe Magazine! This was my very first time being included in a magazine, so when I found out it was going to be with my one of my favourite publications, I was ecstatic. Being fairly new to the wedding industry, it was amazing to be able to participate in these shoots and meet some of the incredibly talented vendors that work in this town (Vancouver brides are so lucky!).
While I had fantastic feedback on all of the cakes, I have to say that it was the Blue Danube shoot that really stood our for me. I have had inquires from Brides across Canada about this cake, so I thought it would be fun to share some details behind the design.
Of course every shoot needs to start with some form of inspiration, and I was lucky to have plenty of it. The colours, textures, and the feeling of the fabulous inspiration board was a great jumping off point and lead to this sketch.

From there it was up to me! While not every detail from the sketch stayed the same, I worked with the overall feel until I had something extravagant, over-the-top luxurious and I think very unique.

Everything, and I mean everything on this cake is handcrafted and entirely edible. From the sugar peonies, to the handpainted architectural details, to the real edible silver gilding, to the topper, crafted out of a sugar paste and painted silver. This cake was huge, but really echoed the gorgeous detailing and grand scale of the Vancouver Club where the shoot was done.
While I loved the cake, it was really the amazing work by the other vendors involved that brought the whole thing together. Here are some more gorgous images from magazine editorial.

I’ve been busy prepping Thanksgiving dinner this morning. We’re talking turkey, my favourite homemade baked beans (which I’ve been working on since Friday ! mmmm) roast veggies, mashed yams with bourbon, maple syrup and pecans, brussel sprouts with shallots and mushrooms and a wine and thyme glaze and of course pumpkin AND pecan pie! I love delicious meals with the great company of family and friends. To top it all off, I’ll be heading to the kitchen in a bit to finish cupcakes and a cake for a Thanksgiving wedding this afternoon. There is so much to be thankful for!
I have some great posts planned for this week, with brand new cakes, magazine features and much more! For now I’ll leave you with some gorgeous Thanksgiving inspiration via Pinterest from the amazing Martha Stewart.

As wedding season is slowly winding down, I am finally getting a chance to go through some pictures from the past couple of months. We have done cakes in all sorts of fabulous colours, shapes and sizes, but today I am loving looking back at some cakes done in classic black and white/ivory. There is something timeless and elegant about these cakes that is really speaking to me on this rainy Vancouver fall day!
This bride wanted something very traditional and elegant, but I think we were able to give it a bit of a sleak, modern twist. Doing one tier of a different height and in all black adds a surprising element to a very elegant design. P & P got married on a gorgeous early September afternoon, so we were able to snap a few shots outside in the sunshine – I just love the handmade sugar roses and painted monogram. I can’t wait to see some photos from the wedding which was held at the beautiful Four Season’s hotel and decorated by the talented Bobi of Radke Designs .

Now this cake might just be my favourite of the year…so far at least! The bride and groom (who is also a chef) loved the idea of incorporating meringue details into their cake and this is what we came up with

The gorgeous architectural features of the Vancouver Club and minimal decor was simply stunning! Here are a couple more of my favourite shots showing the chrysanthemum like meringue peaks and handpainted details.

Colour is often of the first things I ask my clients about and one of the first details that a couple chooses when planning their big day. Of course there are always colours that are more popular or trendy than others, but I often wonder how couples come to their final final palatte decision. For some I’m sure that it is just a favourite colour, but for others inspiration can come from a variety of places. I recently found a great colour palatte generator that I thought I would share with you. You can pull images from pretty much anywhere and the colour recognition software will pick and match the perfect palette for you. Here are some fabulous examples.
Why not try pulling colour from a favourite cake or cookie? Our handpainted Van Gogh sugar cookies inspired a palette of gorgeous greens, creams and whites

Do you have an invitation you adore? Pull your palette directly from a stunning design like this one from Rifle Paper Co.

The possibilities are endless!
How did you choose your colour palette?

Curtis and Debbie got married on one of the hottest days of the summer this year; I remember being so thankful for my air conditioned car as we drove to the beautiful Marine Drive Golf Club to deliver and set up a collection of gorgeous sweets. Their inspiration came from a stunning deep raspberry coloured pashmina and the design flowed from there. Check out these beautiful images from Melissa Gidney Photography.

Isn’t Debbie one of the most beautiful brides you have ever seen?

The Cake: 6 inch tall tiers add height and drama – the perfect mix of traditional and modern design elements. Raspberry coloured meringue roses cascade down the front of the cake with a handcrafted monogrammed sugar topper adding just the right amount of metallic sparkle.

The Sweets: Debbie and Curtis decided to go with more than just cake for their guests and incorporated sweets and pastries into a gorgeous dessert buffet. We made mini cupcakes and cake pops in divine summer flavours.

Take advantage of fresh summer berries! Vanilla cupcakes with toasted coconut buttercream and a fresh raspberry.

Lemon cupcakes with white chocolate buttercream and a fresh blueberry.

For the chocolate lovers – chocolate mocha cake pops!
